These could include people you talked to, a positive experience you had, or a gift you received. For some, a good life may mean basking in nature every single day. For others, it means dedicating their life to be of service to others. There are also people whose definition of a good life means playing video games and eating whatever they please.
This is because understanding predictable patterns in the world around us is a sort of innate survival mechanism, and humans used patterns years ago to adapt to changes in their environment to survive. Understanding the meaning of life is a universal concept that people around the world question. Interestingly, both the Eastern and Western worlds have differing philosophies, with Easterners focusing on the “we” or the meaning behind humanity as a whole, while Westerners are more individualistic, focusing on the “I” or their personal sense of meaning. If you’re not sure what they are, think of the goals you have that you are not reaching. Nobody can ever achieve all of their goals — if someone could, he would be aiming too low. What matters is the present, and the talents and gifts that we bring to it.

When our autonomic nervous system is in a state of calm, safety, and connection, our bodies can better restore, heal, and repair. On the day of my mother’s funeral, I remember sitting in the back seat of our car and seeing two old friends of mine from elementary school arriving. It had never occurred to me that they would miss school to be there for me. This simple act of support meant more to me than they will ever know. A single, small act of kindness can be meaningful to everyone touched by it. We generally assume that facing too many obstacles while pursuing a goal takes a toll on our motivation level.
- If a person’s life
is significant insofar as she is true to herself or her deepest
nature, then we have some reason to believe that meaning simply is a
function of those matters for which the person cares. - Mindful listening is essential if you want to give your full attention to others when you are having a conversation and it makes the other person know you are interested and care.
- A standard distinction to draw is
between the meaning “in” life, where a human person is
what can exhibit meaning, and the meaning “of” life in a
narrow sense, where the human species as a whole is what can be
meaningful or not. - Meanwhile, significance is focused on understanding the experience of a life worth living.
If somebody is treating you badly, you have chosen to accept it by not taking action to stop it etc. Unfortunately, with paid work, people most often choose the job which gives them the pay check they need to get from week to week or, month to month. It’s understandable but work takes up so much of our time that it really should be more meaningful than that. A meaningful life means that you know what is important to you and what is not.
Those are limiting beliefs, aren’t they? Who would want to live with those kind of beliefs?
If you wanted to identify what is important to somebody, examining how they spend their time might seem like a good place to start. And, if you feel as though it’s hard to get through even the tiny stuff some days, that’s OK. But instead, try recognizing the fact that you’ve been given the opportunity to struggle.
Iddo Landau, Ph.D., is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Haifa. He has written extensively on the meaning of life and is the author of Finding Meaning in an Imperfect World. Another principal sense of “meaning,” however, has to do with notions such as worth, value or importance. For example, when someone says “meeting him was a very meaningful event for me,” or “in the context of such a huge economic transaction these twenty dollars are meaningless” they are using “meaning” in this second sense. In other words, it’s an experience that feels larger than life. But different people will experience transcendence in different ways.
The motivation to make changes
In no country did a substantial number of people claim their paying work was the primary source of meaning in their lives, but that doesn’t mean jobs were meaningless. They were among the top three sources in 12 of the countries surveyed. Work was most meaningful in Italy, mentioned by 43% of people, compared to the low of 6% in South Korea. Another person told me that he considered his life to be meaningless because he failed to write fiction of as high a quality as he hoped he would.
Being finite,
the spouse must obtain his or her importance from elsewhere, perhaps
from the sort of work he or she does. This work also must obtain its
meaning by being related to something else that is meaningful, and so
on. A regress on meaningful conditions is present, and the suggestion
is that the regress can terminate only in something so
all-encompassing that it need not (indeed, cannot) go beyond itself to
obtain meaning from anything else. The standard
objection to this relational rationale is that a finite condition
could be meaningful without obtaining its meaning from another
meaningful condition. One of the field’s aims consists of the systematic attempt to
identify what people (essentially or characteristically) have in mind
when they think about the topic of life’s meaning.
Life Has a Supernatural or Unexplainable Meaning
To be sure, one might not remember having done
them before and hence could avoid boredom, but for some philosophers
that would make it all the worse, akin to having dementia and
forgetting that one has told the same stories. Others, however, still
find meaning in such a life (e.g., Belshaw 2021, 197, 205n41). Most analytic philosophers writing on meaning in life have been trying
to develop and evaluate theories, i.e., fundamental and general
principles, https://ecosoberhouse.com/article/can-you-moderate-your-drinking/ that are meant to capture all the particular ways that a
life could obtain meaning. As in moral philosophy, there are
recognizable “anti-theorists,” i.e., those who maintain
that there is too much pluralism among meaning conditions to be able
to unify them in the form of a principle (e.g., Kekes 2000; Hosseini
2015). Arguably, though, the systematic search for unity is too
nascent to be able to draw a firm conclusion about whether it is
available.
- At first, when you start learning how to exercise and workout for the first time, you may feel uncertain and uneasy because you may be unsure what to do and/or how to improve your physical fitness.
- The familiar idea is that God
has a plan for the universe and that one’s life is meaningful
just to the degree that one helps God realize this plan, perhaps in a
particular way that God wants one to do so. - Offering support is a fundamental part of living a meaningful life.
- If we don’t have self-confidence, it’s easy to think that there’s something fundamentally wrong with us—that there’s nothing we can do to change ourselves and create the happy life we desire.
- There has also been the response that, with the opportunity for
greater meaning from God would also come that for greater
anti-meaning, so that it is not clear that a world with God would
offer a net gain in respect of meaning (Metz 2019, 34–35).
When we learn how to think, feel, and act in ways that make us a person we really love, we can be more self-confident and, as a result, live happily more easily. However, contemplating what you want in life (purpose, coherence, or significance) and taking actionable steps toward fulfilling that meaning will help you live a more meaningful life. This “life-worth-living” concept is related to eudaimonia,[4] which can be defined as living well or flourishing in life. However, it’s important to understand the distinction between significance and eudaimonia.
I have created a FREE Checklist to help you determine whether you are living your life with purpose or, not. On the other hand, being comfortable and proud of who you are doesn’t mean that you’re welcome to abandon the idea of growing and how to create meaning in life changing — on the contrary. You simply have to set and reach goals in a way that’s uniquely you. Well, in some, but not all cases, you may be living in the wrong place, working at the wrong job, or slumming it in the wrong relationship.
